2017 1ST QUARTER SPECIAL DINNER FOR THE CONFERMENT OF FELLOWSHIP

SPEECH BY PRESIDENT OF

THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF ENGINEERS,

AT THE SOCIETY’S 2017 FIRST SPECIAL DINNER FOR THE CONFERMENT OF FELLOWSHIP, HOLDING ON THURSDAY FEBRUARY 24, 2017 AT THE NAF CONFERENCE CENTRE, ABUJA

Protocols

I sincerely welcome you all on behalf of the Council, the Executive Committee and the entire membership of the Nigerian Society of Engineers to this Special Dinner. I commend the spirited effort made by all of you to join us here in the nation’s capital to witness this crucial event, being the first in the series for 2017.

As part of innovation, the Board of Fellows/College of Fellows have fashioned the Special Dinner to serve as an avenue for interaction between and amongst Engineers, as well as with other professionals. The underlying reason here is for the advancement of the Society’s ideals as well as increasing visibility for our activities both in the public domain and for the attention of policy makers in the country.

Accordingly, our Special Dinner provides us the opportunity for the promotion of our service to nation and mankind, networking and more importantly the desired occasion for the conferment of Fellowship on deserving distinguished Engineers.

Ladies and gentlemen, today thirty (31) of such engineers of distinction will become Fellows of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. They are joining the league of elite professionals in delivering value services to the development of our beloved nation.

I want to particularly welcome our Conferees to the prestigious Fellowship of our Society.  Your conferment is earned by dint of hard work and dedication.

However, I wish to rekindle here that, the expectations of NSE and the larger society from our Honourable Conferees are high, with regards to strict adherence to professional codes, standards and ethics. The NSE therefore, reserves the right to revoke and withdraw the Fellowship certificate of any member enmeshed in breaches brought to the notice of the Society. In this regard, the Board of Fellows has been mandated to put in place the framework, not only for the restructuring of the College of Fellows, but also for monitoring the adherence quotient of all Fellows to professional codes, standards and ethics.

This Conferment of Fellowship must not be seen as an end in itself but an opportunity to be of greater service to the Nigerian Society of Engineers; supporting its projects and programmes, and lending your voices and muscles to its quests to change the face of engineering practice. I therefore charge you to continue to prove yourselves as worthy ambassadors of NSE.

Majorly, interactive sessions for Fellows have been yielding the desired result. Fellows have continually made useful contributions at such fora and had always become active participants in strategic areas of development in the country. Top on the agenda has always been renewed commitment to the promotion of the engineering profession. Fellows have consistently agreed, with one voice, on the need for generous donations towards the completion of the NEC phase 2, amongst other issues.

Let me commend the Board of Fellows, ably led by Engr. Sir Chris Okoye, FNSE, which has painstakingly gone through the diligent process of selecting the calibre of Engineers to be conferred tonight. The Board has consistently put its best foot forward in bringing out the cream of our noble profession for recognition, as it has done again, this time. I salute every member of the Board.

Ladies and gentlemen, I want to use the opportunity of this gathering to reiterate the commitment of our Society to raise the bar for the engineering profession in the country.

At this conferment, The Board of Fellows has considered it necessary to centre our discourse on the necessity of not only empowering engineering teachers but to graphically point out the means of linking up with the industry. The link is essential for our economic progress as a nation.

The current Board of Fellows has accorded the Fellowship of the NSE the dignity and professionalism it deserves, by reviewing the guidelines/conditions for Fellowship approval to give more weight/scores to professional engineering accomplishments. These have led to more quality in the Fellows of the Society. The ultimate goal is to make the fellowship of the Society the envy of Engineers in the country, as well as the Society at large.

Once again, I congratulate our new Fellows, and welcome them to the league of Distinguished Fellows of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, while I wish them great successes in their respective endeavours.

Thank you all for coming.

Engr. Otis Anyaeji, FNSE, FAEng

President

SPEECH BY THE PRESIDENT OF NSE AT THE INVESTITURE CEREMONY OF THE 2ND CHAIRMAN OF NIHTE

SPEECH BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF ENGINEERS AT THE INVESTITURE CEREMONY OF THE 2ND CHAIRMAN OF THE NIGERIAN INSTITUTION OF HIGHWAY AND TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERS (NIHTE), ENGR. OBIEKWE GABRIEL ANADUAKA, FNSE ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2017, AT THE NATIONAL ENGINEERING CENTRE (NEC) HEADQUARTERS ABUJA

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen

I am delighted to be here today to be part of this auspicious event being the investiture of Engr. Obiekwe Gabriel Anaduaka, FNSE as the 2nd Chairman of the Institution Highway and Transportation Engineers (NIHTE) of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

Engr. Anaduaka is an astute Engineer, we are confident that you would put all your knowledge and experience to move the Division to the desirable altitudes in the drive for the growth of engineering. We therefore look forward to a very purposeful tenure for you as we offer our full support.

I am happy that the NIHTE since its establishment has been a focal Division due to vibrancy and commitment to the ideals of our great Society, your consistency in the organization of pungent capacity programmes within the short period of your existence lay credence to this assertion. I wish to congratulate all of you on such milestone and I wish to particularly congratulate Engr. Isa Emoabino, FNSE, pioneer Chairman for his distinction always.

Let me emphasize here that our Divisions must continue to tailor their programmes in a manner that will promote knowledge enrichment for us to also become global leaders in engineering feats. Let me also remind you that our policy mandating Divisions to submit at least two incisive papers emanating from their national conference for publishing in the NSE Technical Transaction Journal remains valid.

Ladies and Gentlemen, let me commend NIHTE for the excellent participation in all the Public Hearing with the National Assembly which has no doubt been promoting the relevance of the Society: and this, I believe the new leadership of the Division will emulate.

The NSE on 28th January, 2013, launched a Governing Council, NSE-TAD (Nigerian Society of Engineers Taming African Deserts), and saddled it with the responsibility of reclaiming territories under the threat of desertification. The Council which will operate through Boards has been specifically mandated to deploy modern technology to turn the Sahara desert to a green land of abundant opportunities for Nigerians and other Africans living in the area. The role of your Division in this important project cannot be over emphasized.

The Nigerian Engineer occupies a position of top priority in the drive for the development of our Nation, especially, in your core areas of operation being the road network provision and the facilitation of smooth movement of people and goods to different parts of the country and even beyond the shores of our land.

In the light of the foregoing, you will agree with me that your Division under the brand new leadership would also constitute a think-thank to see the possibility of contributing immensely to this project.

I wish to categorically state here that our hope to opening up of our economy is highly dependent on our ability to skillfully tackle our road infrastructure deficit and the achievement of seamless transportation system.

I congratulate you all on this auspicious occasion of the investiture of your new Chairman.

I thank you for your attention.
