NSE Recommends Local Manufacturer of Vehicle Speed Limiters

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has recommended the manufacturer of vehicle speed limiter devices locally. President of NSE, Engr. Otis Anyaeji, FNSE, FAEng made this position known when he visited the Minister of Science and Technology, Engr. Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, FNSE, FAEng in Abuja, on Thursday, March 17, 2017.

Anyaeji, said that the local production of the device will boost the capacity of Nigerian Engineers, additionally, create jobs and enable government to save scarce foreign exchange.  According to him, the country will save N40 billion which would have been used to import the device from foreign manufacturers.  “We understand that the retail price of this device is about N40, 000. We estimate about a million commercial vehicles being targeted by FRSC will be involved. And on the face of it this translates to N40 billion at commencement’’ he said.

 

The Minister of Science and Technology, Engr. Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, FNSE, FAEng in response, thanked NSE for the timely communication with the Ministry on the matter. He disclosed that, he had already directed one of the agencies under the Ministry, Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHETCO) to develop the device and was on the verge of perfecting it for mass production.

Onu further stated, in line with the recommendation by NSE for Nigeria to effectively explore the business, the Ministry is planning to present the device to Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) for their consideration and adoption.
